Last night a coughing fit woke me around 2AM, so I decided to lull myself back to sleep with a podcast from On Being with Krista Tippett. In addition to my fascination with the vastness of space, lately I’ve been poking around the vastness of space in my own head to see what I might discover and improve there. Anyway, scanning the dial brought up Ms. Tippett’s interview with social psychologist Ellen Langer. It’s a chat worth hearing, and I never did fall off to sleep. Dr. Langer has done some work with businesses, and one of her perspectives I found fascinating is:
“Mindlessness is the application of yesterday’s business solutions to today’s problems. Mindfulness is attunement to today’s demands to avoid tomorrow’s difficulties.”
I think there’s a nod to creativity and to risk taking in the statement. What are you doing differently to address today’s demands?
OK, here it comes… You knew this was coming, and it is to the point of mindlessness because it’s just so prevalent. A “no brainer” so to speak.
The cloud “is attunement to today’s demands to avoid tomorrow’s difficulties.”
