I’ve got a thing or two about HR:

So this HR Tech LinkedIn group discussion caught my attention: “Do you think social media is a necessary skill set for HR professionals?” I recommend reading the 8 or so comments, plus these excellent articles by Jessica Miller-Merrell, Jeanne Meister, and Sharlyn Lauby to get a feel for what social media in HR means.

facebook-mobileTo me, the importance of social media and HR is encapsulated in one little story. A friend was telling me about his company and its challenges. It had an older, very capable workforce, but a thinning product pipeline, and it was struggling to bring new, young blood into the company. Later I was telling my friend about my blogging and social media at Kronos. “Oh, we don’t have blogs, and we don’t allow Facebook or Twitter. We can use LinkedIn, though.”

My dumb look faced him. Well, I was dumbfounded. “You can’t attract young talent for fresh ideas, and you don’t allow social media? Hmmm…”

“You know they’re doing it on their phones, right?”
