“Twenty Feet from (Data) Stardom”

20 ftNPR rode shotgun on this morning’s commute, and kept me company by yapping two interesting music stories at me. One was Spotlighting Background Singers In “Twenty Feet From Stardom,” a wonderful preview of an upcoming documentary about unheralded backup singers like Lisa Fischer, Darlene Love, and Merry Clayton, who “brings it” in iconic fashion to the studio recording of the Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter.”

The second story, Competitors Try To Chip Away At Pandora’s Audience, discusses the launch of Apple’s iRadio, the landscape of streaming music competitors, and the data analytics that help these services create personalized stations for listeners. The more these companies know about their listeners, the better they can tailor playlists to keep them as listeners – and customers.

The same is true for your workforce. The more you know about them, the better you can keep them engaged and productive. Our Workforce Analytics is one tool that can give you that “big data” insight, but that’s not important right now. Right now I’m getting psyched to see Lisa Fischer and her band tomorrow night…
