Yesterday it was reported that NBA Finals MVP LeBron James had opted-out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2016-17 season, a contract that was to deposit $24 million dollars in Mr. James’ bank account.

Based on this action, is LeBron James a disengaged employee?

Hardly. He’s a hometown guy (Akron) and seems quite content to play at home. He’s just exercising his right to pass on the current contract option and sign a new deal for much more money. In spite of the money they make, there are plenty of disengaged athletes in professional sports. LeBron James just isn’t one of them. His employee engagement, and that of his teammates was what pulled them out of a 1-3 finals hole to come back and win the championship. Employee engagement is a powerful propellant of success.
