Crafting the Sounds of Summer

April 3, 2015

Hornsby Wait for SpringIt’s been a long winter here in New England, and I’m not even talking about the near 10 feet of snow in Boston. Out where I live, ours went to 11. No, I’m talking about the long, cold, dark, and bitter days and nights of winter after your baseball team finishes in last place…

Spring is finally here, and hope… Well, you know what hope does for the 30 teams who will “Play Ball” beginning this Sunday night with fierce rivals the Cardinals and Cubs meeting at 101 year old Wrigley Field. I can smell the hot dogs now. In fact, odds are I’ll be downing one of Nathan’s Finest with (Play)Joyce as we watch our team play the New York Yankees a week from tonight in the Bronx. Depending on who you ask, the Red Sox are a World Series favorite or simply not very good.

That’s why they play the games.

“The crack of the bat, the sound of baseballs thumping into gloves, the infield chatter are like birdsong to the baseball starved.” – W. P. Kinsella

Brett Laxton Baseball CardsThe crack of the bat will gong in the real arrival of Spring, and Brett Laxton is one man who makes that sweet sound possible. Brett loves and lives the game. Yeah, he went to “the show.” Now, Brett Laxton is the “Batman” behind over 100,000 hand-crafted wood bats for Marucci Sports, including the lumber for David Ortiz, José Bautista, and Albert Pujols, just to name a few. In our ode to Spring, Brett Laxton is April’s One in One-Hundred Million employee. So a week from tonight when I hear the violent crack of Big Papi going yard into the right field bleachers, I’ll think of Brett.

Let’s go Red Sox!
