Oh, Say Can You See

July 4, 2014

Mr. Smarter Café is on vacation and completely off the grid this week, so here’s another guest blog by Terri Edkins, Senior Services Marketing Manager at Kronos. Thanks, Terri.

The Fourth of July conjures up images of flags, picnics with friends and families, parades with fire engines and marching bands and fireworks.

And yet, I can’t help but think about what the day represents.  The freedom that we enjoy in the United States and the people who voluntarily sign on to preserve it.   Our system of governing may not always be perfect, but we have the right to air our opinions, we can peacefully assemble, and the transition between our Presidents every four years is civil and free of bloodshed.  And we have the privilege of being able to participate in this democratic process by casting our vote without fearing for our lives.

Do you vote?  I have to say that as soon as I turned 18 I registered to vote and made it my business to become educated about the issues in my town, my state, and the country.  I not only consider it my right, but my responsibility, my way of honoring all the men and women who lost their lives defending our independence.   Plus, I’m one of those people who believes that you give up the right to complain if you don’t participate!  I’m proud to say that I have always cast my vote.

Happy birthday America and happy Independence Day!

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
