“Whenever the world makes you cynical – stop and think of these men.”
Those were the words of President Obama earlier today in Normandy, France to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Allies* storming the beaches to begin freeing France from the Nazis. The President spoke at the American Cemetery and Memorial, where some 9,400 American soldiers are buried just above the English Channel. (Play)Joyce and I made sure we paid our respects in Normandy when we visited France in 2011. We had to go. Paris shines today because so many from our “greatest generation” died helping to lift her from darkness.
The world and our lives would be much different today if not for their selflessness, courage, and sacrifice. Please take a minute to stop and think of these men.
* The Allied Forces were made up of troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland.
