Kronos Workforce Central 7 now 78% Java Free!

April 29, 2014

Airplane CoffeeReaders of this space will know I covered the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.7 update issue ad nauseam from November through February. In an article in the Spiceworks community titled Take control of Java on your network, the author summarizes the JRE experience:

“The Java runtime is a constant source of pain and irritation. It will download updates and fail to install without admin rights, won’t work with certain sites, and the security options can be changed. And everyone knows that Java exploits are extremely common, which means updates are crucial.”

In related news, a popular Knowledge Base article in our own customer portal (password required) is titled How To Correct Workforce Client Problems Related to Java Updates… Ugh.

So if Java is a pain and negatively impacts our customer experience, why can’t we kick the habit? Well, Java courses through legacy Workforce Central code like caffeine through a jittery regular at Starbucks, but we’re getting there. In fact, employee functions like Employee Self Service, Timecard, and Time Off requests on the desktop are Java-free in Workforce Central 7!* And we’re targeting the rest of our users (Timekeeper Manager Functions, Admin, and Advanced Scheduling Manager Functions) to also be Java-free over the next 20 months!

So, by upgrading to Workforce Central 7 and eliminating Java update pain for roughly 78% of your users, maybe you’ll actually have time for a second cup of coffee.

* The one exception is our specialized Workforce Activities product.
