Who’s Next?

February 7, 2014

Hey, why not stick with the band as a thematic companion today? It worked for me yesterday, but maybe not for you. It’s not a song this time, but the title of the best record they ever made, in my opinion. Anyway, the title fits because I’m talking about succession. i.e. Who’s next to fill key roles in your organization? This week on Facebook, one of my friends posted this quote:

“I believe over the next decade computing will become even more ubiquitous and intelligence will become ambient. The coevolution of software and new hardware form factors will intermediate and digitize — many of the things we do and experience in business, life and our world.”

Nadella cloudHuh? The quote was attributed to the newly named CEO of Microsoft, and was accompanied with colorful commentary from my friend regarding its high technobabble content. Sometimes we’re bad like that in tech, but that’s not important right now.

mobileMy point here is that a company the size of Microsoft ($73.72B revenue for FY12), does exhaustive succession planning, and they picked a cloud guy, Satya Nadella, as the 3rd CEO in company history. Yep. I keep harping about it, but the cloud is critical to software companies the likes of Microsoft, and the cloud is vital to Kronos.

Oh, and of course “going mobile” is a key to the future, too…
