Stressed Out Santa

December 24, 2013

santa smartphoneIt was my intention to deliver a Christmas Eve treat today, but it’s not happening. My interview with North Pole CEO, Santa Claus got cut short yesterday, plus the insane commercial sleigh-ride to tomorrow has me scattered. In an effort to avoid the candy crush at my Hannaford, I arrived this morning at 7AM. My plan involved surprising my son with Julia Child’s authentic boeuf bourguignon, but instead I got another potential blog title:

Out of Thyme on Christmas

Last night I poked my iPad with an outline of the interview with the Big Man. I wanted specifics on how Kronos is helping the North Pole operation control labor costs, minimize compliance risk, and improve workforce productivity, but it just wasn’t to be. We simply didn’t have time for a full sit-down chat. It was silly of me to think that was realistic. Santa Claus wasn’t jolly, although his cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry, and his belly shook like a bowlful of jelly. Clearly he’s fraying, and the stress is showing. He mentioned his whole operation is on an ERP system from the late 90’s “with tons of customizations.” Santa then went all over the road…

“Our email server is constantly going down, and the Naughty and Nice database gets hacked constantly. Yeah, wait till TMZ starts releasing that stuff.” I finally asked about his Kronos system. “No worries there. The scheduling keeps the elves happy, and they all get paid correctly. You’ve seen “Elf,” right? So you know what one angry elf can do.” I asked if he was concerned about the JRE 1.7 issue and Workforce Central. “JRE? Never heard of it. We’re in the Kronos cloud, so they take care of all that IT stuff. We just use it.” The big man’s smartphone buzzed, and he flashed a frown. “Gotta run. HR. Some Elf named Walter in the Chemistry Kit factory got caught stealing beakers.”
