Help Cure the Summertime Blues

May 25, 2012

My mom grew up in Lowell, MA. The city was founded in the 1820’s but Mom grew up in an era a few years later… While taking tickets at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium for professional wrestling events in the late 50’s, a young man spotted the beautiful young brunette. Today I call that guy “Dad.” The people have changed, but much of the city history is preserved. Old textile mills still line the Merrimack River, marking Lowell’s legacy as an incubator of our industrial revolution. In another bygone era, Wang Laboratories grew up in Lowell. The city today is a multi-cultural melting pot of 100,000+ working-class families and individuals. Nearly 25% of the population is under 18… A long, hot summer approaches…

Well I called my congressman and he said Quote:
“I’d like to help you son but you’re too young to vote”
Sometimes I wonder what I’m a gonna do
But there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues

People are helping these kids. Kronos is the platinum sponsor for the Martini Spring Fling on Thursday, May 31st, to raise money for Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell (SEGL), a United Way charity. SEGL provides summer programming for kids to help them develop leadership, social and academic skills that will empower them for life. Last year SEGL raised over $100,000 and served more than 1,900 youth through 13 programs including the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, Inc., Girls, Inc., the Merrimack Repertory Theatre, and the YMCA! Kronos was there. Yeah, that’s us…

This year’s Martini Spring Fling will feature a fun silent auction, scrumptious food and well, martini’s! Through a SEGL connection on the inside, I know there will be over 50 silent auction items, including: hotel and Maine beach house packages, a Red Sox/limo package, an iPad and Kindle Fire, 12 works by artists of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, Pure Hockey stuff, and autographed sports memorabilia including a Paul Pierce basketball, an Adrian Gonzalez Red Sox shirt, and a Zdeno Chara autographed puck! I’ve never lusted after a puck before, but I think I want that.

Here’s the deal. I want you to come, and I’m willing to buy your ticket. So, the first person to leave a comment here asking for a freebie gets it! There’s one catch. You’ll have to go nuts at the silent auction. Last year I picked up an iPad and a sweet leather purse. It’s beige though, so I can only use it in the Spring and Summer. It’s my cure for the summertime blues…
