IDC Directions 2011

March 11, 2011

Attending conferences is always interesting, if for nothing more than the people watching. These days though, it’s getting less interesting to watch people nose-diving into their smartphones while some analyst is pouring their intellectual heart out in front of a Powerpoint slide 30 feet away.

The second, and more important reason for my interest is the intellectual stimulation. No, I’m not going all elitist on you. I mean the phenomenon that happens to my brain when it’s lathered by the massaging fingers of new ideas. Whether I’m gazing at a surreal image painted by René Magritte, watching a YouTube video on basement renovation design or listening to an analyst describe the direction home to “Intelligent Industries,” my neurons start firing in chaotic trajectories. In other words, hearing IDC Chief Analyst Frank Gens describe the current industry stew of mobile devices, expanding mobile broadband, cloud-based service delivery, social networking and “Big Data” analytics, synaptically simmered into a workforce analytics solution for our hosting & managed services customers, delivered to their CFO’s on iPads. “Here’s a dashboard of all the opportunities for labor savings and increased productivity across your enterprise.” Nice. Ideas are easy. Execution is hard.

Of course there were buzzwords galore. Here are my favorites:

  • Socialytics – Social Media Analytics… In a session of the same title, the analyst said, “we coined that.” Of course you did.
  • Wikitrivia – The whereabouts of an alphabet of technology companies like Apollo, Banyan, Cullinet, DEC, Wang and your company if you don’t smarten up and help your customers work smarter.
  • Zettabyte – a unit of computer storage equal to one sextillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) bytes. Hey, I would have gone with “Sexybyte,” but I’m in Marketing.

My key takeaway:
I want to say one word to you. Just one word.
Are you listening?
Analytics.
